The form taken by these early
chandeliers was usually a wooden cross or a more sophisticated ring or
crown of bronze or brass, with metal prickets — sharp points — on to
which wax candles were pushed. These Romanesque or Gothic styles were to
experience a resurgence of popularity in the nineteenth century. Then
came the curly-armed brass forms, with which we are familiar from the

These chandeliers were more
than mere lighting appliances: they were works of art. Styles
changed, from the light-as-air romanticism of Parker's neoclassical
creations, with their tapering arms and delicate beaded necklaces, to
the solid magnificence of the Regency tent-and-bag or tent-and-waterfall
forms. What did not change was the social significance of these objects.

Traditional forms of glass
chandelier remained popular into the early twentieth century, partly
because the alternatives in interior decoration — whether Arts and
Crafts, Art Nouveau, Art Deco, or Modernism generally opted for other
forms of lighting. Although Modernism produced a few lighting fittings
that can justifiably be called chandeliers in that they use multiple
bulbs, fragmenting light for effect, on the whole these movements
preferred pendant lights with fabric, metal, wood, or glass shades.
